The answer to a real need

The air we breathe indoors, where we spend much of our lives, can contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs): harmful pollutants released by building materials, furniture, cleaning products, and electronic devices. Fabbrica dell’Aria (FdA) is designed to effectively reduce the presence of these compounds, contributing to create a healthier and more comfortable environment.

The system offers a range of benefits that extend beyond air purification, enhancing the overall quality of living. The integration of plants in indoor spaces adds value in every context, as it promotes concentration, helps reduce stress, increases productivity, and positively influences learning activities.

A bio-machine that breathes

In addition to the plants, FdA utilizes an advanced technological system that combines fans, automated irrigation, specialized lighting, and environmental monitoring sensors. The fans positioned at the top create negative pressure inside the enclosure, forcing air to enter through the holes made in the bottom of the basin. Thanks to the patented Stomata^® air diffusion system, air is distributed within the growing substrate, where the natural filtration process begins. Pollutants are trapped by the soil particles, which are rich in life, allowing the microbial flora that synergizes with the plant roots to initiate the degradation of harmful molecules. The purified and filtered air is finally released into the environment, maintaining unchanged temperature and humidity.

The versatile solution for every space

Biofilter

Located in the lower compartment, this subsystem allows air to enter the device, diffuse evenly through the growth substrate, and remove most airborne pollutants upon contact with the plant roots. Alongside the plants, it contains three essential components:

– A specially designed basin that facilitates irrigation water drainage and prevents stagnation of wastewater (patent pending).

– Stomata^®, a patented air diffuser protected also by a design model, optimizing air distribution without drying out the plant substrate.

– The growth substrate, optimized for its composition and particle size, providing the ideal balance between air permeability and moisture retention.

Cloroplasta

The upper enclosure of Fabbrica dell’Aria consists of a metal element where the lights and fans are pre-assembled and wired. Designed to meet the needs of the plants while providing a pleasant environment for people, it utilizes two types of programmable and adjustable LED lights with different emissions: blue and red wavelengths stimulate photosynthesis, while a neutral white light enhances user comfort. The lamp body also houses the fans necessary for air circulation.

The Digital Subsystem

A network of sensors and monitoring devices, connected to the cloud, continuously measures air quality and sends the data to a dedicated platform. This data is analyzed and made available on a personalized web page for each installation. Users can access this platform in real time to monitor environmental health and manage FdA easily and intuitively.

Hydraulic System

Water management is handled by a control unit that automatically regulates the irrigation frequency without requiring user intervention. A float sensor and a flow meter ensure safety and reliability by detecting any malfunctions and enabling timely actions. The system also includes a drainage pump that disposes of water to the building’s waste outlets. The necessary hydraulic lines, at the customer’s expense, include a D16 supply pipe and a D32 drainage pipe.

The FdA team works closely with design firms to develop customized solutions. While the modular solution effectively addresses most needs, customization becomes particularly valuable when specific requirements or communication needs call for a more creative approach and tailor-made solutions.

Air purification

In June 2024, performance measurements were conducted to evaluate FdA according to the AC-4-2022 method established by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). The tests, carried out in the United States at Intertek laboratories on a 75×75 cm module, assessed the pollutant reduction efficiency in a test chamber. After introducing specific contaminants at predetermined concentrations, FdA’s ability to purify the air was measured. The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) was calculated to quantify performance, representing the volume of air purified from the target contaminant. The VOCs tested included toluene, limonene, heptane, ammonia, and formaldehyde. For formaldehyde, a CADR of 167m3/h was achieved, with nearly 100% removal efficiency.

FdA was developed based on scientific experiments conducted in the laboratory by Stefano Mancuso, a pioneer in plant neurobiology. His groundbreaking research into plant behavior has expanded the boundaries of knowledge, paving the way for new advancements in green technology.
