Green Benefits Analysis
Trees positively impact the urban environment by moderating the climate, improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, and lowering CO2 levels. Additionally, trees bring economic benefits that exceed the costs of maintenance. With the Green Benefits Analysis, Pnat can quantify these benefits, providing institutions with a valuable tool to assess the value of natural assets.
For Estra, Pnat conducted an evaluation of 29,151 trees in Prato, recorded in the city’s Green Database. The database was divided into six zones (North, South, West, East, Montemurlo Industrial Area, and City Center) to assess each zone’s impact. Trees were categorized by species, and their contribution in terms of pollutant removal, stormwater reduction, energy savings, and CO2 reduction was estimated.
"Plants in urban environments play an irreplaceable role in improving climate and atmospheric quality: they have a tangible effect on the urban climate by filtering and purifying the air from dust and pollutants."
Stefano Mancuso
Professor
Each tree’s species, diameter, health status, location coordinates, age class, biomass, and leaf area index (LAI) were considered. The city’s green cover was estimated using aerial imagery, including private green spaces and areas adjacent to the database’s focus zone. Data was processed using tools like i-Tree ECO and i-Tree Canopy (USDA Forest Service). The estimation of tree benefits and their current and future value combined collected data with local climate and air pollution information.
