Green Benefits Analysis
Trees positively impact the urban environment by mitigating temperatures, improving air quality, reducing rainwater runoff and flood risk, and lowering CO2 concentrations in the air. Furthermore, trees provide cities with significant economic benefits that outweigh maintenance costs, both routine and extraordinary. These positive effects depend on factors such as tree species, location, health status, and the management of green spaces.
By conducting a Green Benefits assessment, Pnat can quantify these benefits, providing institutions with a valuable tool to understand the value of natural heritage.
This analysis evaluated the economic and environmental benefits of trees in Parco Cavallo Pazzo in Rome, supported by the Associazione di Promozione Sociale “Casetta Rossa,” with financial contributions from the GoFundMe Italia crowdfunding platform and sponsorship by Chef Rubio. The shared goal was to understand how much trees improve the quality of urban life.
The project was made possible thanks to the people who supported the fundraising campaign #ANataleCensisciUnAlbero, promoted by Chef Rubio and Stefano Mancuso on the GoFundMe Italia platform.
The assessment focuses on 248 trees recorded in the Parco Cavallo Pazzo census, provided by Associazione Casetta Rossa. The trees were classified by species, and their contributions were measured in terms of: removal of air pollutants (absorbed or directly prevented), reduction of rainwater runoff, energy savings, and CO2 reduction (by storage and sequestration). Data was processed using software such as i-Tree Eco and i-Tree Canopy (i-Tree Tools, USDA). The benefits of the trees, along with their current and future value, were estimated by combining the gathered information with local climate and pollution data.
