PRATO URBAN JUNGLE - Farm Park
Prato Urban Jungle is an innovative plan of urban forestry, greening and efficiency improving realized for Prato city with the aim of redefining the relationship between city, environment, resources and inhabitants. Funded by the European program 2019 UIA – Urban innovative action, the plan includes the renewal of abandoned or degraded urban areas, planting of trees and plants, the creation of community gardens and orchards, the conversion of mineral surfaces into green filters and the phyto-remediation of contaminated areas.
Farm Park project is composed of several parts: a urban high-performance greenhouse for growing vegetables at km0, a food court composed by containers where to taste local products, an area dedicated to music and cinematographic events, consisting on a stage made of recycled materials and a playground, where playing will be a way to approach the most current environmental issues. All components are strongly embedded with greenery and are designed to be flexible, encourage outdoor living and minimize the impact on the environment.
In this project, Urban Jungle concept fits perfectly: the planting of a large amoutn of plants and trees will help to create shade, purifying air, mitigate the temperature and offer a comfortable and healthy environment for citizens. Using in sinergy plants and recycled materials is a strategic way to convert a residual area into an accessible space for all the inhabitants of Prato.
This is a redevelopment project that will gradually extend to the whole park, with the active participation of the municipality and associations operating in the area. In this intervention, the cultivation of vegetables at km0 becomes an engine for the local economy, promoting the meeting and the activities of the community. Hydroponics and rainwater reuse technologies provided in the greenhouse will ensure the sustainable production of large quantities of vegetables. The greenhouse will also have an educational purpose: people will there learn cultivation practices and technologies, benefiting from a training course at work that will then find an outlet in activities related to nursery and green management. Within the Prato Urban Jungle masterplan, the Food Park becomes an opportunity for the inhabitants to get closer to the themes of food education, sustainable agriculture and ecology.
“The environmental issue is also inherently social, just as sustainabilty is also equity. This is a project of urban regeneration space throught plants, that rewrites the relationships between inhabitants and resources within the city.” Stefano Mancuso
