PRATO URBAN JUNGLE - Macrolotto 0 Covered Market

Prato Urban Jungle is an innovative plan of urban forestry, greening and efficiency improving realized for Prato city with the aim of redefining the relationship between city, environment, resources and inhabitants. Funded by the European program 2019 UIA – Urban innovative action, the plan includes the renewal of abandoned or degraded urban areas, planting of trees and plants, the creation of community gardens and orchards, the conversion of mineral surfaces into green filters and the phyto-remediation of contaminated areas. Within the masterplan of Prato Urban Jungle, PNAT is working on two pilot areas: via Turchia social housing and Macrolotto 0 new city marketplace.

In Macrolotto 0 site, PNAT designed the conversion of an industrial warehouse into a covered market. The project involves the use of several plant-based solutions, in order to generate benefits in terms of environmental microclimate regulation, temperature mitigation, air quality, thermal and acoustic insulation and rainwater regulation. The external surfaces of the former industrial building will be covered with plants with low-maintenance technologies and open spaces will be re-naturalized. The conversion of the shed will be also a model for the reuse of the abandoned industrial heritage of Prato. The interior spaces will host a market for local agricultural products and a large indoor greenhouse dedicated to the preparation and consumption of food. This greenhouse will be the largest realization of Fabbrica dell’AriaTM, our air purification system through plants. The whole building will offer a healthy and comfortable environment. Citizens will be able to buy local vegetables, eat healthy food and spend time in a real Urban Jungle, enjoying the psycho-physical benefits of immersion in nature.
