Historically, plants in urban projects were included mainly for aesthetic or decorative purposes. Only recently have we recognized that integrating plant systems into cities is one of the most effective strategies for addressing challenges such as water management, soil stabilization, rising temperatures, and air quality improvement.

This guidebook, created for the Municipality of Prato but applicable to other urban areas, focuses on Plant-based Solutions—strategies that leverage plants and trees to tackle specific urban issues. The term, adapted from the scientific concept of Nature-based Solutions, intentionally emphasizes vegetation. By doing so, we highlight the unique role of plants in transforming our cities into healthier, more sustainable spaces.
