An auditorium where nature meets industrial heritage
As part of the masterplan and landscape design for the Lucca Technology Park, curated by PNAT, a new 1,000-seat auditorium has been conceived. This new auditorium repurposes an existing industrial building, reusing its primary structures and architectural elements to blend heritage with innovation.
The auditorium incorporates plants as a fundamental element of its design, seamlessly integrating nature to enhance the space and create a unique biophilic experience.
The new auditorium in Lucca, designed by repurposing an existing industrial structure, seamlessly integrates Nature Based Solutions into its architecture. A wide, flat wooden roof extends outward, providing shade and shelter while harmonizing with the natural surroundings.
The facade features densely planted trees, their canopies blending with the structure to create the impression that nature is woven into the architecture. This design achieves a harmonious fusion of built elements and greenery, with plants playing a vital role both inside and outside, contributing to air purification and enhancing the microclimate. The landscape around the auditorium is a lush mix of green lawns, wildflowers, and shrubs, creating a park-like setting that invites visitors to engage with the outdoor space.
Indoor and outdoor foyers
The outdoor foyer continues this integration of nature with structured pathways and organic landscaping. Paved with irregular stone slabs and greenery, the space includes ample seating surrounded by trees and native plants, forming a garden-like lounge where guests can relax. The open structure allows sunlight to filter through the canopy, making it a vibrant extension of the indoor space and fostering a seamless transition between interior and exterior.
The two foyers are connected by large glass doors on the ground floor, ensuring a smooth flow between the spaces. A balcony on the first floor overlooks the indoor foyer and leads to a terrace facing the outdoor area, offering guests unique views of the surrounding greenery and creating a harmonious blend of architecture and landscape.
The hall
The auditorium hall offers a unique blend of nature and modern design, with large windows behind the stage that open onto a view of lush greenery, creating a natural backdrop for performances. This feature blurs the line between the indoor and outdoor environment, enhancing the audience’s experience by connecting them to nature. The simple, dark interior design keeps the focus on the performance and the vibrant greenery beyond. This integration of natural elements within the auditorium adds a calming, biophilic touch to the space, setting it apart as a distinctive venue.
