Urban Innovative Action
Transformative Vision and Objectives
In August 2019, the European Union selected the Prato Urban Jungle project among the 20 winners of the 4th call for Urban Innovative Actions (www.uia-initiative.eu), a program that funds pilot projects promoting sustainable urban development. The project’s goal is to test green solutions, or Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), in pilot buildings across Prato, creating a scalable model that can be replicated in other European cities (www.pratourbanjungle.it).
Agricultural Structure for Social Housing
The agricultural facility located on Via Turchia was specifically designed for a social housing complex. The decision to build a high-efficiency greenhouse stemmed from an analysis of the residents’ needs, which highlighted that employment rates and household income within the community were below city averages. Consequently, one of the primary aims of the project was to create paid jobs through urban agriculture.
Greenhouse Production and Economic Impact
Covering around 250 square meters, the greenhouse may be modest in size compared to rural facilities, but it boasts advanced cultivation technologies that enable a substantial yield. Annual production is estimated at about 20 tons, generating economic activity that provides part-time employment for 10 residents, thus helping to boost family incomes.
The initiative includes the formation of an association for these workers, offering a 12-month professional training program in greenhouse management. After completing the program, participants will have gained valuable skills, preparing them for employment in local nurseries. Each year, a new group of residents will enter the program, and over five years, 50 residents will have benefited from this training, contributing to the social and economic regeneration of the community.
